Learn MoreWhat actually matters before you buy — clearly explained by NIU.
For dense city use you want a compact footprint, instant torque, easy parking and a battery you can carry up to your apartment.
NIU’s premium city pick is the NQiX 150 — narrow, quiet, sharp pull off the line, and built around a removable battery that charges from any household socket. One step below sits the NQi Sport as the value entry point with the same connected platform. And the upcoming FQiX 150 brings a sportier ride feel into the same 45 km/h class.
For genuine last-mile riding — the trip from the train station to the office, or short hops around the neighbourhood — NIU’s KQi e-kickscooters round out the urban line-up.
It depends on your daily distance and whether your route includes faster roads.
For inner-city commutes up to roughly 40 km a day on 50 km/h roads, the NQi Sport, NQiX 150 or upcoming FQiX 150 are the easiest fit. For longer hops or commutes that include 80–100 km/h sections, the NQiX 300 and FQi 500 step up — same connected platform, more range, higher top speed.
For riders who expect more: The NQiX 500 is NIU’s most advanced performance scooter — built for maximum power, cutting-edge technology, and everyday practicality. Fast, agile, and made to elevate every ride.
What actually makes commuting painless on a NIU is the combination of removable batteries (charge at the office or at home), the NIU Smart App, and a dealer network across Europe.
Removable batteries are a NIU signature feature — the entire current line-up is built around them. That includes the NQi GTS, NQi Sport, NQiX 150, NQiX 300, NQiX 500, FQi 500, XQi3 and the upcoming FQiX 150 and FQiX 300.
You unlock the seat (or battery compartment, depending on model), lift the pack out, and charge it indoors at any normal household socket — no wallbox, no parking-spot wiring, no electrician. This is one of the biggest reasons NIU works for renters, apartment dwellers and anyone without garage power. Longer-range models use two packs you can swap and charge independently, and from Model Year 2026 the NQiX 500 even accepts a third pack.
For genuine long-range riding, look at the NQiX 300 and NQiX 500. Both run dual battery packs and a more powerful drivetrain than the city models, comfortably covering regional commutes on a single charge.
The NQiX 500 is the current flagship — built for highway-capable touring, smart-connected, and tested as the top-ranked electric scooter in 1000PS’ independent comparison. With Model Year 2026, the NQiX 500 also accepts a third battery pack — extending real-world range significantly for longer tours and weekend rides.
Yes — and NIU was one of the first brands to make a connected app standard rather than an optional extra. Every NIU two-wheeler ships with the NIU Smart App: live battery and remaining range, GPS location, anti-theft alerts, ride history, service status and over-the-air updates.
That covers the entire range — NQi, NQiX, FQi, FQiX, XQi and KQi — from city scooters to performance bikes, light electric motorcycles, and electric kick-scooters. Your vehicle sends data to the cloud the moment you turn it on, and you see it on your phone wherever you are.
It depends on the country, because licence categories are national. Across NIU’s European range:
In Germany and Austria, the 45 km/h models are road-legal on the standard car licence with the B196 add-on, or on a class A1 licence. In France, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, the equivalent models can be ridden on AM (moped) or A1 licences.
NIU dealers list the exact licence class for every model in your country, so you know before you buy — no surprises at registration.
100 km on a single charge is well within NIU territory. The NQiX 500 reaches around 100 km per charge, and the NQiX 300 pushes that to roughly 120 km. From Model Year 2026, the NQiX 500 also accepts a third battery pack — taking the practical range further still.
Range figures are based on the WMTC city cycle. Real-world numbers depend on speed, rider weight and temperature, but the NQiX line is designed to match a typical commute round-trip on a single charge — and then some.
NIU uses lithium-ion pouch cells rated for 800–1,000 full charge cycles. After that point the pack still retains around 70–80 % of its original capacity — it’s not dead, just gradually shorter-range.
In practical terms, at roughly 100 km per charge, that works out to a battery lifespan of 80,000–100,000 km before you’d need to think about replacing the pack. Most riders sell or upgrade their scooter long before they get anywhere near that mileage.
Running the numbers on 5,000 km a year, at €0.32 per kWh:
• NQiX 500 (electricity): roughly €65 per year
• 125 cc petrol scooter (fuel): roughly €220 per year
On top of that, pure electric two-wheelers in Germany are exempt from Kfz-Steuer (vehicle tax), there’s no oil to change, no spark plugs to replace, no exhaust to repair. Real-world maintenance costs typically land at 30–50 % of a comparable combustion scooter — and that gap widens as the scooter ages.
NIU is one of the world’s largest electric two-wheeler brands, with millions of riders across more than 50 countries. NIU was the first brand to build connected electric scooters at scale and continues to set the benchmark for battery technology, app integration and design quality.
Most recently, the NQiX 500 took the top spot in 1000PS’ independent electric-scooter ranking — the same benchmark used by riders, dealers and journalists across the German-speaking market.
For city use you want something quiet, parkable, low-running-cost and emission-free. Electric scooters tick all four boxes better than electric cars on trips under ~25 km, and better than e-bikes whenever you need real weather protection or to carry a passenger.
NIU’s full range — from the compact NQi Sport up through the NQiX line and the FQi performance series — covers everything from short last-mile hops to regional commutes, all on the same connected platform.
